Located in Historic Mt.
Dora, in the heart of Lake County, The Colonel
Alexander House, (both the
home and and its property) is being offered for sale by owner. This
prime real estate in
Mt. Dora Florida is a
dream come true as a single home home or for potential
development with the purchase of the adjacent lot, one of the rare
vacant lots available in historic downtown Mt. Dora!
Mt. Dora
is located on beautiful Lake Dora in the heart of Central
Florida, just a short drive to Orlando and Disney World. Mt. Dora is known as the "New England" of Florida and
is a community built on small rolling hills around a 4,500-acre lake.
The streets are lined with old oak trees, and in the historic district
no building can exceed three stories. An active merchants association
takes great pride in the downtown. Local businesses and organizations
vie for the best seasonal decorations, at Christmastime nearly 2
million lights illuminate Donnelly Park. Mt Dora is perfect for
young families or retirees, and all those in-between.
C olonel
J. M. Alexander contracted J. P. Donnelly, builder of the Donnelly
House, to build this cypress and heart pine frame house. One of Mount
Dora, Florida's most important developers, Colonel Alexander was a
founder of the local Methodist Church, partner in building the
historic Lakeside Inn and co-owner of the first general store in Mount
Dora. With the exception of a metal roof that now covers the original
cypress shingles, this house stands today as it stood when Mount Dora
was nothing but a settlement in the wilderness. It is a fine example
of the architecture of frontier Florida.
In 1982 the house
was restored to a single family home. At that time new wiring,
plumbing, insulation and drywall were installed. The bead board, heart
of pine floors, windows, woodwork, and doors, including hardware, are
original. If you love the warmth of heart pine floors, bead board, and
sound of rain on a tin roof, this may be your home. The original
stable has been converted into an additional finished room and storage
area.
The Colonel Alexander house is
located on the corner of Eighth Avenue and Baker Street in Mount Dora.
The house is situated on a 67.66 X 139 foot lot, zoned R2, and is
located within the downtown Historic District and is two blocks from
the center of town. Restaurants, Post Office, banks, downtown shops
and the city parks with all of their many activities are within
walking distance. The grocery, drug store, and other services are
less than
a mile away.
Lot number 2 is located on the
east side of the house. This 72 X 140 foot lot is also zoned R2,
which allows for the construction of a duplex or a single family home.
The house proper is 1748 square feet with an additional 585
square feet of screened and open porches.
